The soroban — the Japanese abacus — is Japan's most famous learning tool, and its place in Japanese childhood has quietly shifted. It was once the default after-school lesson, the thing you did alongside swimming and piano. Today most Japanese children meet it for a few hours in a classroom and never touch one again, while the after-school slot it used to own has gone to English and programming. It's still taught, still respected, and still does something no calculator does — but it is no longer where the queue is.

It came to Japan from China, where the older suanpan carries two beads above the bar and five below. Japan gradually stripped it down — first to one and five, then to the one-and-four layout that became the standard in the twentieth century and is what every Japanese child uses today. That trimming is what makes the soroban fast: there are no redundant beads to think about, so finger movements become automatic.

Where Japanese Kids Actually Learn It

There are two separate places, and people outside Japan routinely confuse them — which is how the myth that every Japanese child is abacus-trained gets started.

For those who do continue, progress is measured by graded proficiency exams, working up through kyū levels and then into dan ranks, the same numbering used in martial arts. Each grade has a fixed time limit and accuracy threshold, so a child always knows exactly what they're aiming at next — a structure that does a lot of the motivational work.

Anzan: The Part That Matters

Here's the thing most people outside Japan miss. The soroban isn't the destination. After enough repetition, students stop needing the physical frame and start picturing the beads, moving them mentally while their fingers twitch in the air. That's anzan — mental calculation — and it's the actual skill the training is built around.

Taken to its extreme it produces flash anzan, where digits appear on a screen for a fraction of a second each and competitors add fifteen three-digit numbers before most people have read the first one. It looks like a party trick, and at that level it partly is. But the ordinary version of the same skill — a ten-year-old adding a column of numbers accurately in their head — is the everyday result of a few years of practice.

What a Lesson Looks Like

  1. Clear the board

    Every problem starts from zero. The teacher's call — "go-hasan de negaimashite wa…", roughly "clearing the board, if you please" — is the signal to reset every bead and listen.

  2. Numbers are read aloud

    In yomiage-zan, dictated calculation, numbers are called out at a steady pace and you enter them as they come. There is no writing anything down and no going back.

  3. Fingers do the thinking

    Thumb pushes the one-beads up, index finger brings them down and moves the five-bead. Fixed fingering for every operation is drilled until it stops being a decision.

  4. Answer on demand

    At the end of the sequence, the answer is already sitting on the frame — you just read it off. Speed comes from never having paused to think about the method.

  5. Then remove the soroban

    The same drills are repeated without the frame, using the mental image alone. This is where anzan is built, and it's why the physical abacus is really a training device rather than a calculator.

What It Really Builds (and What It Doesn't)

Soroban is often sold abroad with big promises about brain development. We'd rather be careful here, because the modest version of the claim is impressive enough on its own.

The honest ledger

  • Fast, accurate arithmetic — clearly yes. This is the direct, well-established result. Trained students genuinely calculate quickly and reliably.
  • Concentration under time pressure — yes. Dictated drills and timed grade exams are sustained attention practice, week after week.
  • Number sense — yes. Because place value is physically laid out on the rods, children can see what "carrying" actually does.
  • Visual working memory — likely, within the task. Holding and manipulating a mental image of the board is real mental work.
  • Confidence — yes, and it's underrated. The grade ladder turns practice into dated, visible proof that you got better at something hard. That "I finished it, and I can see it" feeling is the part of any hands-on activity we'd call genuinely educational.
  • General intelligence or school maths overall — don't count on it. Skills of this kind tend to be strongest in the domain they were trained in. Soroban makes children fast at calculation, not automatically better at word problems or geometry.
An honest note from Japan 🇯🇵

Full disclosure on our own experience, because it's more representative than the articles you'll read abroad: nobody at our shop went to an abacus juku. We used a soroban in class for a handful of lessons and that was the end of it. That's a far more ordinary Japanese childhood than "every Japanese kid is abacus-trained" suggests — the serious training has always been an opt-in, and the opt-in rate has fallen. What stuck for the people who did continue is rarely "I'm a maths genius," but "I can still do sums in my head faster than my colleagues" — plus the memory of sitting still and concentrating for an hour at a time, which for a seven-year-old is its own achievement. Same reasoning as Japan's wider hands-on learning tradition: the value is in the doing, not in the marketing.

What Japanese Kids Are Learning Instead

This is the part that surprises people. If the abacus club has emptied out, something filled the slot — and in today's Japan that something is English conversation schools and programming schools. Those are the after-school lessons with the queues now. A Japanese parent choosing one extracurricular in 2026 is far more likely to pick coding than beads.

It's a rational swap, and also a slightly sad one. Soroban's honest selling point was never that arithmetic is a career skill — a phone does that. It was the drill itself: a graded, patient, hour-at-a-time discipline that happens to leave you with a genuinely useful mental trick. English and programming teach things a child will visibly use. Soroban taught a child to sit down and concentrate. Both matter, and only one of them is easy to put on a school application.

Worth noting what didn't change: soroban is still in the national curriculum. Every Japanese child still meets it. It moved from being something you were sent to learn to something you're shown — which is a demotion, but not a disappearance.

Trying It Outside Japan

If you want to start a child on it, three practical notes. Buy the modern one-and-four soroban, not a decorative Chinese suanpan — the fingering everything is taught with assumes the Japanese layout. Expect to need a curriculum, whether that's a local class, an online course or a structured workbook; the tool alone teaches nothing, and this is a discipline built entirely on graded repetition. And start somewhere around six to eight, which is when Japanese children who do take it up typically begin — old enough to handle place value, young enough to enjoy the drill.
